Recently, social and physical scientists have realized that the easiest way to analyze large nonlinear feedback systems is to simulate them. DYNAMO was the first continuous simulation compiler especially designed for the social scientist. Its language permits easy communication with the computer and easier communication between scientists. In fact, the language can be mastered by nonprogrammers in hours rather than the weeks or months required by most languages. The DYNAMO II Users Manual describes the latest version of the DYNAMO system. The compiler now accepts any valid algebraic statement and permits the user to specify his own functions. DYNAMO not only thoroughly checks for errors, but also attempts to run the model despite errors. It is available in both time-sharing and batch versions. The complete DYNAMO system includes a documenting program that lists the model with definitions interspersed explaining the terms and factors used in the equations following every group of two or three equations. Such a listing greatly simplifies the reading of a model. Where the definitions appear is determined by a companion program, NUMBER, which renumbers the equations. NUMBER will also reformat the equations, standardizing indentations, etc., and even changing the spelling of the names of variables if desired. The manual is organized into three chapters: a primer, a reference manual, and a discussion of errors and how to correct them.
