He has BS and MS degrees from Texas A&M and PhD in rural sociology from Mississippi State University. He and his wife, Rita, are both acountry kidsa and live outside of Granbury, Texas. They have three sons and five grandchildren. He spent his career working with and for Texas and Missouri farmers and rural families. Reared on a small crosstimbers farm in central Texas, he has personal experiences in rural living as well as professional experience dealing with rural issues. These themes and others run throughout the poems in this book. Many of the poems were inspired by news stories and true accounts John has read and heard over the years. The cover on the book is a reproduction of a prize-winning portrait painted by Mrs. Jean Carmichael, the wife of his high school football coach, Alvin. The author appreciates her sharing her exceptional artwork with him for this project.
